Top 2023 Landscape Lighting Trends
Landscape lighting is a timeless upgrade that never goes out of style – but there are also exciting new trends that emerge each year. If you’re thinking about installing landscape lighting or upgrading your current system, keep these ideas in mind.
High-End Outdoor Fixtures
While the majority of landscape lighting is hidden, some fixtures are meant to be seen. This includes porch lanterns, overhead fixtures, and sconces. There are a wide variety of styles available, and lately, we’ve been seeing homeowners splurging on stylish, high-end statement lighting. This can give your outdoor area an upscale feel while also complementing your home’s architecture.
Color-Changing Lights
Adding color-changing LED lighting to your outdoor space makes it easy to decorate for the holidays, celebrate special occasions, or set a unique vibe. You can accomplish this by installing color-changing bulbs in a variety of fixtures including outdoor lamps, spotlights, and sconces. Many color-changing lighting systems are Bluetooth-enabled, so you can easily control them using a remote and/or an app on your smartphone.
Moonlighting
Moonlighting uses downward-facing floodlights placed up high to create the effect of natural moonlight. This lighting technique has been trending for a few years and its popularity continues to grow. Moonlighting is primarily for aesthetics and setting a mood rather than providing enough light to add safety or security.
Dark-Sky Friendly Lighting
Light pollution has been an ongoing problem in populated areas. Not only can an excess of artificial outdoor lighting make it difficult or impossible to enjoy the night sky, but it also can create negative effects on both humans and wildlife. This has led many homeowners to opt for dark-sky lighting, which points downward and uses warmer colors or lower temperatures. Dark-sky lighting also has a minimum of blue light, which brightens the sky more than any other color.
Some communities are also passing dark sky ordinances, requiring homes to meet certain lighting standards. Before installing landscape lighting, you’ll want to check to see if there are any policies you need to follow.
A Total Shift to LEDs
The U.S. Department of Energy has issued new lighting standards that go into effect in 2023. This includes a requirement for light bulbs to have a minimum efficiency standard of 45 lumens per watt, effectively banning halogen/incandescent bulbs. In the near future, you can expect all landscape lighting systems to use LED outdoor lighting products. LED lights are also less expensive, more efficient, and safer, making this a trend we can definitely get behind!
